In summary, Vicky showed that the outer membrane of B. abortus is heterogeneous, with patches of the major porin Omp2b colocalizing with patches of Rough (i.e. short) lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Moreover, Vicky found that two outer membrane proteins, peptidoglycan and LPS are inserted at the new pole of the bacterium, as well as the constriction site in dividing bacteria. Interestingly, LPS exhibited very low mobility, suggesting that the whole outer membrane has a poor mobility. This is important if one consider antigenic variability, and in particular the ability of a bacterium to generate daughter cells with a different surface antigen.
